1118 | Patience's surname was thought to be Mason according to "The Chafee Genealogy", Chaffee, William H., 1909. - Probably based on Swansea records which seem to indicate a marriage between Stephen Chafee and Patience "Mason". However Barrington, Rhode Island recorded a marriage on the same date at Swansea between Stephen "Chaffey" and Barrington resident Patience "Martin". The theory being that the Barrington records were more accurate because of Patience being a resident of that place and which also included her father and mother's names. Additionally, Patience Mason nor her parents have been "found" in Swansea or Barrington with the correct time frame. The accepted birth date of Patience "Mason" puts her in her 73rd year of age at time of death but the headstone states she was in her 74th year of age which is correct for Patience Martin. Until proven otherwise the available evidence seems to lean toward Patience Martin being the correct name. | Martin, Patience (I183)

1141 | Robert Hawley, who was born on the Brandywine River in Chester County, Pa., was of English ancestry. Being a strict adherent to the Quaker doctrines he did not participate in the Revolutionary War, but tradition tells us that Robert Hawley was warned to flee from his home and, shortly after, the battle of Brandywine was fought upon his premises. He learned the tanner's trade. In 1800 he settled in Lycoming, Pa., with a colony of Quakers at Pennsdale, near Muncy, where he conducted a tannery. He subsequently operated a tannery in Hughesville, but at the time of his death resided at Muncy. He and his wife, Patience, both lived to an advanced age and lie buried in the Friend's Burying-ground at Pennsdale. They reared the following children: Robert; Gideon; Enos; Ann (Haynes); Hannah (Whitaker); and Mary (Yearsley). - Book of Biographies of the Seventeenth Congressional District Published by Biographical Publishing Company of Chicago, Ill. and Buffalo, NY (1899) | Hawley, Robert (I110)
