Martin Van Buskirk lived outside of Cambridge, New York in the hamlet of Buskirk's Bridge from before 1778 until his death in 1828. Buskirk's Bridge named for Martin Van Buskirk was also known by the Indians as “Ty-o-shoke" or variously spelled by the early settlers as Tiossiook, Tiassick or Tiashoke. This hamlet is simply known as Buskirk, New York in modern times. This area was part of the original 70,000 acre Hoosick Patent which Hendrick Van Ness (Maria's gr gr grandfather) was one of the original four grantees in 1638.
On the Hoosick river, and partly in the town of Cambridge, is the village of Buskirk's Bridge. The place derived its name from Martin (Van) Buskirk, an early settler, who built the first bridge across the stream (in 1802 or 1804). He was also a pioneer tavern-keeper, his house on the Cambridge side having a wide reputation. Philip Van Ness, John Quackenbush, and Colonel Lewis Van Wort, of Revolutionary times, were among the early prominent settlers near Buskirk’s. There was a store kept by Carpenter, and afterwards by Allen, which enjoyed a large trade in those days. - History of Washington Co. New York, 1874
Martin Van Buskirk was one of 3 original commissioners of the Northern Turnpike Road Company in 1799. The company was incorporated to build a road from Lansingburgh through Cambridge to Salem and ending at the Vermont state line. Tolls were collected at several points. This road opened up travel and commerce as well as bolstering the development of Cambridge. The road is now known as Rt. 22 and many of the original marble mile markers encased in stone still exist along the route.

    Notes:

Mr. Van Buskirk, of Lansingburgh, a descendant of the early family of Van Buskirks, at the "Bridge," and also a descendant, on the maternal side of the Van Ness family, states that the pioneer Van Ness owned a tract of 1600 acres of land, thus having a farm of 400 acres to give to each of four daughters. ...This settlement was before the Revolution. During the Burgoyne campaign the Van Ness family were in Albany, and the estate was left in charge of two colored men, who proved themselves shrewd and vigilant enough to gather and keep a large harvest away from both Whigs and Tories. When asked how they did it, they replied, "We had two flags, and could show either in a hurry." "But how did you know the Tories from the others?” "We could tell a Tory by his looks just as far as we could see." - History of Rensselaer County

    Notes:

John married Phoebe Deuel, 11th month 22, 1772, and settled near his father. When the Hessians under Baum were on the way to defeat at Bennington, they passed through Cambridge, where they camped overnight. Upon the approach of the Hessian, this young couple buried many of their scant possessions and fled to Dutchess county, where her parents were then living. Here they suffered the privations and depredations which fell to the lot of all those who lived along borders of the "Neutral Ground" during the revolution. They did not return to Cambridge until peace had been declared; in 1810 they removed to Peru, New York.
Phoebe Deuel was the daughter of Joseph Deuel (DeVol) born January 9, 1735, in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and his wife, Rachel Smith, born November 20, 1738, in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Phoebe was an unusual woman born 1st month 21, 1757, married 11th month 22, 1772, became a mother 9th month 9th month 12, 1773, bore fifteen children, all of whom lived to have families of their own, and she had one hundred and twenty-seven grandchildren. Joseph Deuel, her father, settled in Greenfield, New York, where he bought a farm in 1788, in a then unbroken wilderness. Here he lived until his death in 1818, acting for many years as the agent of the owners of that part of the Kayaderossis Patent. - Genealogical and Family History of Western New York, Vol. 1, P. 452-455, William Richard Cutter

During the war they went back to Dutchess County. When the war was over they returned to Cambridge, bringing six children with them. Here they lived until about 1810, when they moved to Peru, now Ausable, Clinton Co., NY. - John Allen and Phoebe Deuel of Cambridge and Peru, NY, Charles North, 1897

Near the junction of the Walloomsac and Hoosick rivers in the north part of the present town (of Hoosick) was a hamlet called St. Croix in colonial times, probably so named by French missionaries who evidently explored the country as far south as the Hoosick river and there established a mission. Aside from this mission the first permanent settlement here probably was made by Gerrit Cornelis Van Ness, a descendant of the family named as one of the grantees in the patent. - History of Hoosick, New York, Anderson, 1897

Edmund Barton, son of Samuel Barton (i), was born in Framingham, Massachusetts, August 5, 1714. He removed to Oxford with the family when he was only two years old. He made his home in the second parish of Sutton, now the first parish of Millbury, and was prominent in town and church affairs. He was often named on important committees of the church and he had one notable difference with the minister over a religious service he held at his own house without asking permission of the minister. He was appointed on many of the important church committees and was evidently a leading man in his day. He was a soldier in the French and Indian wars. Mr. B. B. Vassell, late of Worcester, author and compiler of the family genealogy, states that Edmund was "bound out" at the age of thirteen, shortly before his father's death. He married, April 9, 1739, Ann Flynt, of Salem. She was born June 9, 1718, and died at Sutton, now Millbury, March 20, 1795. Edmund Barton died there December 13, 1799, and is buried with his wife in the old burying ground at Millbury. The children of Edmund and Anna Barton were: 1. Dr. Stephen, born June 10, 1740, at Sutton; studied medicine under Dr. Green, of Leicester; was trader at Oxford 1764-6; landlord 1766-9; removed to Vassaloboro, Maine; returned to Oxford, 1790, but went again to Maine and died there October 21, 1804; grandfather of the late Judge Ira M. Barton, father of Edmund M. Barton, librarian of the American Antiquarian Society at Worcester; grandfather of Clara Barton (Clarissa H., born December 25, 1821, daughter of Stephen and Sarah (Stone) Barton. Sarah Stone was the daughter of Captain David and Sarah (Treadwell) Stone. Clara Barton is the famous Red Cross leader.) 2. Mary, born June 10, 1742, married Obadiah Brown, of Sutton. 3. Elisha died at Cambridge in 1802. His will, which was written on 29 September 1801, was admitted for probate before the Washington County Court on 10 June 1802.
