Samuel and Lucy were married in Canada where both their families had moved just after the War of 1812. Samuel was a blacksmith and was in the employ of the British Government during the War of 1812. The climate was too cold, however, and he came to MI, settling in Covert Twp., known at that time as Deerfield Twp. The country was very wild at that time and the property he purchased was covered in timber. He cleared the land and cultivated a 40-acre farm where he lived the rest of his life.

Sherbourne; Lucy A., wife of Lyman Carpenter of Covert; Samuel D., a merchant in Covert; Cynthia A. of Chicago, who married Frank Reed; Lottie E., wife of E. G. He was formerly connected with the Methodist Episcopal Church and also with the Congregational Church. Even though he was not a member of either church, he led an upright Christian life.
He devoted much of his life to fruit farming, was very successful in grafting trees, and does so for many other parties. - Portrait and biographical record of Kalamazoo, Allegan, and Van Buren Counties, Michigan : containing biographical sketches of prominent and representative citizens, together with biographies of all the governors of the state, and of the presidents of the United States, Chicago, Chapman Bros., 1892, pg. 341

    Notes:

James Sherburne (1798-1880) was the eldest son of John and Mary. About 1821, he and his brother Joseph traveled to Ontario and began a lumber business near Hamilton. He married Sarah Middaugh (1805-1891), daughter of Martin Middaugh and Mary Hawn. In 1825, Sarah petitioned the Canadian government for a land grant, as she was the granddaughter of Martin Middaugh, a United Empire Loyalist who had been born in New York State, but moved to Ontario during the Revolution. James and Sarah were granted 200 acres in Trafalgar District, Halton County, and later purchased an adjacent fifty acres. James and Sarah had fourteen children, all born in Canada. About 1856, apparently deciding he was more American than Canadian, James decided to sell out and move the family to Wisconsin, where land was opening up. A wagon train with family and supplies was organized. They crossed into Michigan and traveled along an old Chicago Trail. Some of the family stopped off in Van Buren County, Michigan, and at least one became a fruit grower, but James and several others went on to Walworth County in southern Wisconsin. There he bought a farm and lived there until his death in 1880. Sarah died in 1891, by that time living with family in Van Buren County. - http://grunerheritage.com/theotherside/sherburne/history2.html

"On the other side of the road from Willcutt's saw-mill, in 1810 was a flax-dressing mill, owned and run by Noah and Irani Packard. About 1816, Reuben Hamlen and Otis Pratt built on the same site a factory for the manufacture of satinets and woolen goods. In 1820 the building which is now the Willcutt mill was removed across the road where it now stands. Mr. Pratt sold his share to Erastus Bates, who moving West in 1834 left Mr. Hamlen to manage the mill alone. After a few years the business was given up." - History of the Town of Plainfield (1891)

David moved to Grimsby Ontario 1802, staying until granted a land petition: Land Petition #8/27 David Kenney of Grimsby 24 Nov 1807 ...to his Excellency, Francis Gore, Esquire, Lt. Gov. of Upper Canada ... that your petitioner came into this province six years ago from the Jersies and has a family consisting of a wife and nine children of which 6 are sons, that he has property of the amount of 500 pounds in province currency, has taken the oath of allegiance and is desirous to occupy and improve a lot of Crown land of 200 acres... The land petition was granted in Council 25 November 1807 (RG 1, L3, volume279, K3/27, 4 pages)
It is believed that David Kenney was a brother to Peter who came to Grimsby at about the same time. Peter Kenney: b. 1766-1774 in New Jersey, d. Aft. 1822 m. December 13, 1795 to Jane McCowen b. 1771-1774 in Maryland. They had 13 children.
It is all but certain David and his brother Peter were descendants of Adrian Pieterse Kinne who emmigrated from the Netherlands in 1660 and resided in Flatbush, Kings, NY and later in New Jersey. Ongoing DNA testing of descendants of both men have resulted in placement in the "Dutch Line" of Kenneys tracing back to Adrian Pieterse Kinne. The exact lineage however is not proven at this time.

    Notes:

The place earliest used in town for a cemetery, so far as known, was the lot on the west side of the road, just north of Mrs. Rachel Shaw's, now occupied by C. W. Streeter as a pasture. Scarcely any race of these early burials, of which there were only a few, now remains. No headstones were erected. Another ancient cemetery lies on the east side of the road just south of the meeting-house.
This was in general use for perhaps twenty years, but was long since abandoned. The last interment here was that of Daniel Streeter, who suicided in 1855. Here were interred Jeremiah Robinson, who owned and operated the first corn mill in town, and his successor, Joseph Beals, the "Mountain Miller," and their families. These last named have been re-interred in the principal cemetery north of the meeting-house. In 1889, the writer witnessed the disinterment of the remains of Jeremiah Robinson, who died in 1824. Portions of the coffin still remained. One fragment bore his initials, J. R., formed by brass-headed nails driven into the wood, as was the custom in those days. Some 20 headstones bearing inscriptions still remain.--About twenty persons were buried in the pasture about half a mile north of Amos K. Griggs'. No headstones were erected, but the graves can still be distinctly traced. - History of the Town of Plainfield, p.56
March 22, 1790, "Voted that Simon Burroughs, Caleb White and Jeremiah Robinson be a committee to view the ground near Streeter's Saw-mill and Determine whether it be necessary to build a bridge over the Brook just above said mill or not." Later at the same meeting it was voted to build the bridge, which was probably one of the first in town. - History of the Town of Plainfield
Jeremiah was a Selectmen for Plainfield in 1791
It is believed that the grist mill, or "corn mill," as it was called, of Jeremiah Robinson, said to have been established in 1789, and the saw mill of Samuel Streeter, both on Mill brook, were the first mills of any kind established here, being mentioned in the records as early as 1791. In 1798 the grist mill was purchased by Joseph Beals, "the Mountain Miller," who managed the business until his death in 1813. - History of the Town of Plainfield, p.68

    - History of the Hamlin Family, Andrews 1902
In the year 1776, John Hamlen, then thirteen years old, removed with his parents to Cummington, three years bfore its incoporation as a town. At the age of sixteen he entered the Revolutionary army and served about six months. He was at the time of his death the last of the Revolutionary pensioners in Plainfield. He married Sally Town (born in Sutton, Mass.) at Windsor, Mass 1790, and settled in Plainfield the same year. He was by trade a carpenter and several of the first houses were built by him or under his supervision. The house which he built and occupied on his homestead where E. A. Atkins now lives, is still in good condition. In 1800 he was chosen one of the selectmen and served for nineteen years. He represented the town in General Court at Boston in 1814, `14 and `15; also in 1823 and 1826. He made the journey to Boston on horseback, and during the May sessions turned his horse out to pasture in the near vicinity, and at the end of the session rode home again. Two other representatives were at the time of their election living in the John Hamlen house, viz.: his son Freeman nnd Edwin A. Atkins, the present member from this town. His wife died Oct. 11, 1818, aged forty-five, For a second wife he married Mrs. Dorothy Gove of Worthillgtou, Nov. 10th, 1819. She died Sept. 21, 1847, aged sixty-nine. Although for many years in feeble health he lacked but a few months of being ninety years of age at his death, which occurred April 15,1852. At the age of seventy-five he publicly professed his faith in Christ as a Savior, and united with the Plainfield church. He had however for some years previously entertained a Christian hope.
