    Notes:

Parentage unknown. No immigration records. Burial unknown. Could have arrived by way of Canada. Son Thomas G. reports that his father Thomas was born in Wales in the 1920 and 1930 census presumably after the father's death. Thomas, the father, always reported his birth in England. In one census, year of immigration is 1857, in another it is 1862. There were very few Strongs in Wales in the 1840's and 1850's but many in England. No death record found, but could contain the names of his parents which could lead to identifying the family in England. He was last listed in the Detroit city directory in 1812 living with his son Thomas G. The middle name of his first born son is "St. John" which could refer to St. John the Evangelist which is also a parish in Westminster, Middlesex, England or could have used the name for other reasons.

Thomas married Alice Louisa Smith on 25 Aug 1864 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. Alice (daughter of Charles Smith and Elizabeth Wilkins Goom) was born on 20 Sep 1840 in St John the Evangelist, Westminster, Middlesex, England; died on 23 May 1906 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan; was buried in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. • Residence: 1851, Bermondsey, Surrey, England

    Notes:

Elizabeth was the oldest of Stephen and Sarah's children. In May of 1815 she was living in Westminster, most likely visiting family or friends there, when banns were read for her and John Hollier in St Marylebone. Objections were made because of the groom's age and the marriage didn't take place. Five months later in the parish of St James Westminster, she married Charles Smith, a cabinetmaker. In both cases she claimed to be a resident of the parish. She may have moved or may have lied about her residence. In both cases she lied about being of age to marry without parental consent. She was 18, and the legal age was 21. She almost always gave her birthplace as Westminster, not Southwark. Elizabeth and Charles lived in Westminster until at least 1841. They moved back to Bermondsey for a time and were living there in 1851, but in 1852 they emigrated to the US with their six younger children children (the four oldest had already moved to Detroit). They settled in Detroit, Michigan where Charles was a land speculator, buying up and developing farmland for sale in what is now downtown Detroit. Elizabeth died in 1868 and buried in Elmwood Cemetery. In 1871, when Charles died, her body was moved to the new family plot in Woodmere Cemetery. - Ronda L. Oberlin, ancestry.com

    • Baptism: 15 Jan 1753, Deptford, Kent, England

    Notes:

Stephen Goom's first wife died in 1790, leaving him with five small children. It's probable that Sarah Wilkins, 18 at the time, went to work for him as a governess. Sarah may have been the daughter of Thomas Wilkins and Elizabeth Lebeck, who lived near Stephen in the parish of St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey. Seven years after the death of Stephen's first wife, Sarah became pregnant for the first of three children she and Stephen would have together before getting married. All three were baptized in the nearby parish of St George the Martyr, rather than the church in the parish where they lived. Stephen claimed they were married at all three baptisms, but acknowledged they were illegitimate in his will in 1809, and referred to the two surviving children by the name Wilkins Goom. Stephen finally married Sarah in 1803, this time traveling to St Mary Whitechapel to do it. It's possible that health issues finally moved him to marriage. They had one more child in 1806 before Stephen died in 1809. - Ronda L. Oberlin, ancestry.com
