Ruth Martin and her mother were on the last train out of Galveston on 8 Sep 1900 before the deadliest hurricane and flood ever to hit the United States. The loss of life from the storm and flood was estimated to be about 8000 people. Ruth lost her mother at a very young age, and was raised by a succession of relatives. She trained to be a dietician, working for a while in Texas, and then at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. After her children were raised she worked for some years for the American Red Cross. She retired with her husband to a country home near Augusta, Michigan, where she took great pleasure in her large yard and garden. - notes by Connie Hankins

"Your grandpa Martin organized his company of 21 men just 100 years ago in the city of Baltimore, Md. He would never talk war but would tell me whan I asked him about some of the wonderful deeds of bravery. For instance the time he led his Company through the Union line at Henderson, Ky and drove 800 head of beef cattle back down to the southern men (the Union men had previously taken the cattle without pay). Some went to La Grange and some to Britton's Lane where men were fighting hand to hand (battle date: Sep. 1, 1862). There is a stone memorial in Britton's Lane standing out there in the woods and under brush, no one seems to know anything about it. (presently it is a Civil War memorial park near Madison, Tennessee) When I was down there on a visit with your Aunt Leila to see some of kin, I went up and read the names. One of them that I knew was Mr. Stribbins, I went over to his home and he told me about the battle and the memorial. It's a long story, however. Mr. Stribbins lived to be 114 years old." Isaac White Martin Sr. worked as a merchant ship captain, delivering and picking up cargo to faraway places such as Gibralter, Maldonado (Spain), Lima, Guayaquil (Equador), Veracruz (Mexico), Havanna, Valpariso and Coliapo (Chile), and Guasca (Colombia) among others. Cargo included sugar, cocoa, furs etc. and wages were $35-$40 per month. The ships were sailing vessels or steam powered including one from Robert Fulton's famous fleet.
Death notice: "Departed this life at half past 2 o'clock P.M. (on the 3rd) after a short but painful illness, Capt. Isaac W. Martin, in the 38th year of his age. His friends and acquaintances are respectfully requested to attend his funeral at 9 o'clock this morning from his late dwelling in Fleet Street." - Baltimore American newspaper, Oct. 4, 1832, copied by Thomas Bishop Martin
"His death was caused from Cholera, which was contracted by his son, I. W. Martin, the second, and later given to the father in a glass of water which both had drunk. RUSSELL, station agent at Arlington and postmaster at Station E, was born in Mobile, Ala., October 11, 1857, the son of Samuel Owens [Owen] and Ellen (Owens) [Odom] Russell, also natives of Alabama. Little is known concerning the ancestral history of the Russell family, save the fact that they came to America from England in a very early day. The father of our subject was a large cotton dealer, having mills in both Alabama and Mississippi, and spending the principal years of his life in Alabama, but his last days in Mississippi, where he died in 1870 [1868]. In political views he was an ardent Democrat. From the breaking out of the Civil war until its close he served in the Confederate army. He was a typical southerner, fond of the south and in sympathy with it in every public issue, a genial, hospitable gentleman, who had many warm friends in the locality where he dwelt. The family of Samuel Owens [Owen] Russell consisted of six children, three sons and three daughters, of whom the others besides our subject are named as follows: Allen, who died in childhood; Charles, a railroad man, now living in Mississippi; Jennie, wife of William D. Martin, who is connected with the railroad and lives at Jackson, Tenn.; Ellen, wife of A. B. Chase, of Alabama; and Delphia Anne, who married J. A. Wimbish and resides at Moselle, Miss. At the time of his father´s death our subject was thirteen years of age, and there-after the support of his mother and a younger brother fell upon him, but he was faithful to the trust and affectionately provided for his mother until she passed from earth in 1888. His education, which was limited, was obtained in the schools of Waynesboro, Miss. At the age of fifteen he went to Jackson, Tenn., where he had charge of a large store for his brother-in-law, remaining there for four years.

John Martin and his wife became members of the First Presbyterian Church of Baltimore May 1,1780 and were again on the membership list in 1783, per Church records listed in the Maryland Historical Magazine Vol. XXXV, Sept. 1940, No. 3. The Church was located at Gay & Fayette Streets 1763-1766 and then at Fayette & North Streets through Rev. Patrick Allison's tenure ending 1802.
John Martin was issued the First US Land Patent March 4, 1788 for 640 acres in Range 4, Township 7, Section 20, which is now known as Richland Township, Belmont County, Ohio. He sold some of this land in 1806 and bought 3 lots in St. Clairsville, Ohio in 1807. He moved his family from Baltimore to Ohio some time after 1800. His Will of 1815 indicated that he owned a tailor shop in St. Clairsville, Ohio. His wife Elizabeth and sons Samuel, Joseph, John and Isaac returned to Baltimore after John's death.
Possible parents of John Martin: Chester County, Pennsylvania was an original County, founded in 1682. Part of Chester County became Lancaster County in 1728; part of Lancaster County became York County in 1749 and part of York County became Adams County in 1800. John Martin's parents may have lived in Chester County just north of Fredericks County, MD. If this is so they would have been living in what is now Adams County, PA. In 1751 part of Chester County became Berks County and part became Delaware County in 1789. Chester County's seat is now West Chester.

There are questions surrounding the wives of William Russell. According to the 1850 census William was born in Georgia about 1781 and Elizabeth, who we assume is his wife, was also born in Georgia, though in 1800. There are no marriage or birth records to confirm the dates in the census. William removed to Wayne, Mississippi prior to 1820 and is found in the 1820 census with 1 boy and 2 girls under the age of 10 in the household as well as 2 more girls between the age of 10 and 15. Also in the 1820 census we have the oldest female being of the age of 26-44 but this could be in error. Elizabeth would have only been 20 in the 1820 census if the 1850 census was correct. So is it possible that William, being 19 years older than Elizabeth, was married prior and some of these children were from a first marriage or other relatives? Together William and his wife or wives had at least 9 known children after 1820 and as many as 5 more previous to 1820. Interestingly none of the children have been found to have named a daughter Elizabeth. William died in Wayne Co., Mississippi and was probably buried at a family plot there. It appears William remarried to the widow of George W. Grayson, Catherine McFarland, for a shortime before he died.
A recent discovery of a death certificate of William's youngest son Solomon who died in Texas in 1922 has his parents listed as William Russell and Mary Clark or could that be Mary Elizabeth Clark?. The informant appears to have been Solomon's oldest son Edmon. Regardless, I have added the last name of Clark to Elizabeth, she is in all likelihood the mother of the 9 known children and possibly 3 of the unknown children born prior to 1820.
