Notes - Near the junction of the Walloomsac and Hoosick rivers in the north part of the present town (of Hoosick) was a hamlet called St. Croix in colonial times, probably so named by French missionaries who evidently explored the country as far south as the Hoosick river and there established a mission. Aside from this mission the first permanent settlement here probably was made by Gerrit Cornelis Van Ness, a descendant of the family named as one of the grantees in the patent. - History of Hoosick, New York, Anderson, 1897
