• Notes

  Col. Samuel Partridge was a merchant. He lived in Hadley, Mass. until 1687, when he moved to Hatfield, Mass. For nearly 50 years (1692-1740) he was a judge of the Court of Common Pleas, and for 30 years he was its Chief Justice. He was also probate judge. He was colonel of a regiment, and one of His Majesty's Council. He was a wealthy and influential man, and one of "the three Connecticut river-gods", as they were known. (The other two were John Pynchon of Springfield, Mass. and Col. John Stoddard of Northampton, Mass.)
