1096 | Obituary: BUFFALO, N.Y. - The death of Mary J. Shorten occured here on March 19, 1985. Born January 9, 1889 in Centennial, she was the daughter of Angus and Mary Ann (MacDonald) MacDonald. As a young girl, like many of her age, she left home to work in Trenton where she met and married Frederick C. Shorten. Widowed at an early age and with six children to support, she left the children with her widowed mother and went to Boston to find work and establish a home. With this accomplished, she sent for her children and lived in Boston for a number of years. To be closer to a son who had gone to Buffalo to work, she made her final move to Buffalo where her family prospered and multiplied to six children, 23 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren. She is survived by three daughters, Alice of Buffalo, Florence of Niagara Falls, Lillian of Florida and one brother, Malcolm A. of Canton, Mass., and Long Point, C.B. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Mamie; two sons, Angus and John; two sisters, Flora and Katie; three brothers, John Archie, Alex F. and Dan A. Her funeral and burial was in Buffalo. ALTERNATE BIRTH DATE AND PLACE: Original baptism document from St. Joseph, Port Hawkesbury, Inverness, Nova Scotia, Canada details a birthdate of Jan. 10, 1888 and baptism of Jan. 15, 1888. 1098 | Obituary: RENO NURSE DIES; WELL KNOWN HERE. Mrs. Edith May Evans, well known Reno nurse, wife of Karl L. Evans, died late yesterday at a local hospital following an illness of several days. She underwent an operation last week for intestinal trouble caused from appendicitis. Mrs. Evans has been a resident of Reno for four years and had a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Prior to her marriage to Mr. Evans four months ago, she was Mrs. Edith May Miller. Besides her husband, she leaves two children, Hugh L. Miller, who is in the naval service and Ruth L. Miller of Aurora, N.Y. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sweetapple, of New York, and two sisters also survive. She was nearly forty years old and a native of New York. | Sweetapple, Edith Mae (I834)

1099 | Obituary: Ruth L. Vagg, 87, of Litchfield, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at the Branch County Community Health Center. Mrs. Vagg was born January 14, 1913, to Frederick and Louise (Hartwig) Sandow. She married Orson R. Vagg October 10, 1934. He preceded her in death in 1998. Mrs. Vagg was a homemaker and was retired from the Coldwater Regional Center. She attended the Litchfield United Methodist Church, and was a former member of the Farmers Club and Home Extension Club. Survivors include a daughter, Jeanette Carey of Waldorf, Maryland; a son, Gene Vagg of Jackson; a brother, Howard Sandow of Brockport, New York; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Jerry; a sister; and a brother. Funeral services will be private and are being handled by the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield. 1100 | Obituary: Uncle Carver Gunn died at his home 3 miles west of town, where he has been living with his son-in-law John Reed, last Monday night the 20th. Mr. Gunn has been in a declining state of health for some time and his death was not an unexpected event. He was born in July 1799 and was therefore almost eighty-six years of age. In the year 1838 he married Miss Lucy A. Owen who departed this life on the 21st of last June. The year after their marriage he moved from Illinois to Lawrence Co., this state where they lived for 12 years. Since which time Mr. Gunn has been a respected member of this community and leaves a host of friends to bear witness to his good name. Six children survive him four of whom are well known citizens of this county Viz. O.D., H.O., R.B. Gunn and Mrs John Reed and two daughters, Mrs. Eliza Pease and Adline Hanlock (Hadlock) residing in Kansas.
